Why are we still denying Illinois Workers their maximum unemployment benefits when they are laid off only because they are eligible for or collecting Social Security? This is for one thing another form of age discrimination. Louisiana and Illinois are the only states never to repeal this law? Remember, at this period in time, the "Boomers" are retiring AND unexpectedly losing their jobs. We continue to create poverty amoung the working class in this country.

ReplyDeleteThat Social Security Offset Law was really an unexpected shock. I got laid off and receive only $17 a week unemployment insurance because I receive social security payments. It took me three months to find another job (outside sales with salary and commission) but unfortunately because of the Social Security Offset Law, my car was reposessed because I coudn't make the car payments or pay auto insurance. This will affect the score on my credit report and of course I could not take the job which required me to have a car.
ReplyDeleteThis would not have happened if I was given the unemployment insurance amount that I am entitled to but denied because of the unjust Social Security Offset Law. The finance company asked if I still wanted the car but with the uncertainty of when I could catch up on the payments and the fact that I have been told that I was on the verge of a stroke, changes things.
Because of what happened and the fact that I was trying so hard to find work (at 73 years old), I did not realize that the stress had creeped up on me. I have to stand down or get shut down by a stroke. I can't understand how anyone could think that the Security Offset Law would not hurt senior citizens on social security who don't usually have the best choices in the job market.
Thank you.
